MONTEMOR-O-VELHO CASTLE
A Medieval Fortress and one time Royal Residence to King Afonso IV. In the 9th Century, the Castle
was under Asturian control. During the following Centuries it was lost and reconquered, until its total
reformation in the 14th Century.
IGREJA SANTA MARIA DE ALCÁÇOVA
Inside the Castle walls, and originally built in 1095, the Church was reconstructed in the 16th Century.
Worth seeing are the Gothic limestone sculptures of Virgem do Ó and Anjo da Anunciação and
Hispanic-Arabian glazed tiles dating around 1500.
CONVENT DE NOSSA SENHORA DA NATIVIDADE
Our Lady of Nativity Convent in nearby Tentugal, where the Carmalite Nuns lived and made Tentugal
famous for its traditional Pastry Cakes. Originally built in the 13th century, it was constructed on the
site of an Islamic mosque.
